I redesigned my resumé and I’m so thrilled with how it turned out! The education/work section tripped me up for a while because I’ve had so many jobs and internships, but I finally got something that I’m happy with. Streamlining is okay!

I snapped this photo on Friday evening, right before a big thunderstorm hit. I really love thunderstorms, and I especially enjoy the lighting before and after a big storm. After experimenting with tinting, shapes, patterns, and opacity, this combination of graphic + photo emerged — a juxtaposition of before and after lighting, muted versus vivid, soft against geometric. It’s quite large and well-suited for a desktop background.

SPRING 2013 UPDATE

I’m working on a series of ads for Negative Fun and the first is now running on Garage Punk Hideout! Totally exciting. You can see the whole thing here – or if you are extremely impatient, you can check out the screencaps below. It’s a gif, yes — I love gifs, and I really love terrible gifs, but this is not a terrible gif. I think it looks rather nice!

ST. AGNES: TAKE TWO

I filmed at St. Agnes Hospital today! This was my second time there and I’m glad I came back in the spring. It was blustery out but the skies were blue and the trees were starting to bud. Construction equipment was piled up nearby so I take it this will be my last time at St. Agnes (at least while it is a secret garden). This photo is a teaser of videos to come!

WXYC POSTERS

Here’s a collection of the posters I made for various WXYC programs and events over the years. Most are for the live monthly Backyard Barbecues but a few are for when bands came on my radio show. One was for a 3-hour one-off specialty show on “Women in Underground Rock” that I coordinated. I even threw in my very first poster (the last one) for WXYC’s 30th Anniversary Party in 2007! Trust, I now know that most ‘handwriting’ fonts are bad.

Some of these, I absolutely love; others, I had to churn out quickly and on the fly. But all of these posters represent experiences that I’m so proud to have been an active part of.

RECORD LABELS

Negative Fun Records approached me a few months ago about designing center labels for two upcoming 7-inches. They liked the simple style and cohesiveness of Sub Pop’s center labels but basically set me free to do my thing. Cohesion is something that I prefer but also strive for as a kind of OCD artist (unless, of course, there is a good reason for a series of things to not be cohesive), so I set out trying to design labels that were relatively interchangeable but still eye-catching.

Here are the A and B sides for the Red Hex 7-inch. Notice the giant “N” and “F?” The “N” is just subtle enough to look like two shapes — but when you flip to the B side, the “F” is what makes the concept apparent. I felt like this was a simple, minimal way to brand these records, and I really like the way they turned out — especially on that bright, red vinyl!

The other 7″ — a split between She Rides and Dripping Slits — required a little rearranging: the A side has two She Rides tracks, the B side has two Dripping Slits tracks. It made the best-selling punk front page on bandcamp, which you can see below. Pretty exciting!

Stay tuned — I have a few other things in the works, including some digital and print ads and special labels for a one-off release!

END OF AN ERA

I will no longer be coordinating The Backyard Barbecue as of early January. I’ve been doing this show for 4 years now and I think I’m ready to switch gears and focus my energy elsewhere. I’ll always be thankful that this show — and WXYC, of course — came into my life. In practically every way possible, these two things have shaped where and who I am today. It’s been an amazing run, but I’m ready for new challenges and opportunities.

So many thanks to all the artists who came on the show during these past few years; to the friends who advised me in this tough decision; to my listeners and callers; to Chapel Hill Underground, for putting on the live shows; and to everyone who came out to support the live Backyard Barbecues. Hopefully all this new free time will translate into going to more shows, having more spontaneity and fun in my life, growing as an artist, and maybe even figuring out what in the hell people do on Sunday nights (other than host a local music show).

My last show (I think) will be on January 6 — I’ll be playing my top 10 local releases of 2012. I’m also doing a mega-radio-show from 3 to 9 PM on New Year’s Eve — my first regular show in a long time! I’m sure I’ll keep doing radio shows, but it won’t be every Sunday from 8 to 9 PM anymore.
